The Early Years
Tom started playing guitar at age 7. Influenced by the diverse artists represented in his parents record collection spanning from the 1940’s-70’s including swing bands, crooners, rock, pop, blues and soul music. Given guitar lessons in a class format at Bradman’s Music Store Rockdale, every Saturday for 12 months gave Tom his rudimentary understanding in music theory.
Tom also spent all his spare time under the musical mentorship of Rick Durand the local luthier and guitarist at Barry Canham’s Rhythm Workshop in the late 70’s and 80’s. During this time Tom began researching more guitar greats and had started to develop his own style and reputation as one of the more soulful guitarists in the local district. After a series of successful auditions and regular gigs with local suburban bands to auditioned some of the bands touring with the Harbour Premier agency is Sydney. Tom’s stint with Chris Brockbank’s band Phantom got him noticed by the booking agent and former front man of legendary Aussie rock act “Finch” Owen Orford. Orford stated that Tom reminded him of a young Angus Young. Owen was instrumental in recommending Tom for the spot as lead guitarist for The Young Lions.
Professional Recording and Touring Artist
Tom toured over the next two and a half years with the Young Lions opening for such acts as The Angels, INXS, Rose Tattoo, Jenny Morris and Jimmy Barnes on the major festivals and pub/club venue circuits.
In 1985 The Young Lions were signed by the then independent label Mushroom Records. At this point the band changed their name to “Kings of the Sun” and recorded their first single release, “Bottom of My Heart” that made the Top 40 in the 1986 Australian charts.
Musical Studies
In 1986 Tom decided to further develop his range and knowledge in musical expression through study. It was at this point that Rick Durand introduced Tom to the original 1960‘s guitarist for Johnny O’ Keefe, Lou Cash, who was teaching guitar at the Rhythm Workshop.
Under Lou’s guidance Tom expanded his knowledge in musical theory and arrangement. This lead to Tom gaining more work outside of the pop arena. Tom’s focus shifted to studio recording sessions in advertising and songwriting purposes. Tom also began teaching guitar at this time as well as working again with local bands developing skills and knowledge in the then new application of computer based music technology.
Tom has extensive experience in recording, editing and producing demo's, EP's and albums.
